During July, the mobile operating system market was dominated by Google's Android platform, a recent report from Millennial Media reads.

Apparently, the platform continued to increase its market share when it came to usage on the company's network and remained the leading platform on their network for the eight consecutive month.

Android's market share went up from 54 percent in June to 61 percent in July, the company notes, adding that Apple's iOS ended on the second position on the market with only 21 percent share.

RIM's BlackBerry OS lost one percentage point on a monthly basis, and came in third in July with 14 percent of the market.

As for other mobile operating systems out there, Symbian lost one point more, and ended with only 2 percent of the market, while Windows Phone remained with the 2 percent it had in June.

However, it appears that Microsoft's platform did register gains. The total number of impressions on Millennial Media's network went up 71 percent month-over-month when it came to Windows Phone.

In the manufacturer's area, Samsung gained impressive share, growing 28 percent month-over-month, while Motorola was present on the top 5 handset vendors, with three phones in top 20 mobile phones.

Some other highlights from the report would include:

- When breaking down ad spend from applications on our network, 48% came from Android apps, while 43% came from iOS apps.

- 33% of the impressions on our network came from consumers on a Wi-Fi network (regardless of carrier). Of those Wi-Fi impressions, 53% were from Smartphones, and 42% were from connected devices.

- Since March 2009, Apple, HTC and HUAWEI all more than doubled their share of impressions.

- Gaming apps made up 29% of app impressions on our network, and increased 35% month-over-month.

- Health and Fitness app impressions grew 13% month-over-month (calorie counting and recipe apps made up two thirds of this category).

Apple’s iPhone was the most popular smartphone on the network in July at 13.60 percent share, Nexus S ended on the second with 5.73 percent share, while BlackBerry Curve was placed on the third position with 5.23 percent.
