Western Digital has launched today its new WD Photos photo viewer app that enables Android smartphone users to remotely access their photo library through the WD home network drive, including My Book Live, My Book World Edition and WD ShareSpace models.

WD Photos app is compatible with a wide range of Android smartphones and is available for the Motorola DROID, HTC DROID INCREDIBLE, Nexus One, HTC EVO 4G and others.

In order to be accessed through the WD Photos app, pictures must be first copied into the Shared Pictures folder on the WD network drive.

Once connected to their home network through an Internet connection, users will be able to access their photo library.

Android smartphone users are offered the option to search for a specific photo by name or date, as well as scroll through thumbnail previews.

“Android phones are enjoying a huge success in the market,” said Dale Pistilli, vice president of marketing for WD's branded products group.

“By customizing the WD Photos app for Android phones, we provide a greater number of our users a better experience for viewing and sharing the precious photos safely stored at home on their WD home network drives,” added Pistilli.

Photos are automatically resized for perfect viewing on Android devices, leaving originals on the network drives in full resolution; Smart filtering to view photos by album, folder or all images and search by date, folder name or file name; Access previously viewed photos offline; Share photos via email, Facebook, Twitter, Picasa and other methods; Assign a photo to a contact; Add a photo to the gallery; View photos in a slideshow.

The WD Photos photo viewer app is compatible with Android OS 2.1 or later and works with WD's My Book Live and My Book World Edition network drives and WD ShareSpace network storage systems. The application is now available through the Android Market as a free download.
