The Nexus 4 has yet to receive the upgrade

It looks like the wait is almost over for some Nexus owners as Google has just kicked off the rollout of the highly anticipated Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade for some of its devices.

The search giant released the Android 5.0 Lollipop source code for a handful of Nexus devices earlier this month, but the factory images were nowhere to be seen.

The reason for the delay may be related to an issue that would cause major battery usage while Wi-Fi is enabled. Apparently, it took Google’s engineering team about a week to replicate it and offer a patch for it, which is why we’re seeing the Lollipop upgrade being released in the second week of November rather than the first.

The good news is the update is now being pushed to Nexus 5 smartphones and will soon be released for Nexus 4 devices as well.

According to Google, Nexus 4 and 5 smartphones, as well as Nexus 7 (2012 & 2103) and 10 tablets, will all receive an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop. However, they might not be available at the same time.

Beginning today, Google confirmed that an OTA (over the air) update from Android 4.4.4 KitKat started rolling out for the Nexus 5.

Even though the search giant confirmed Lollipop would be available for the Nexus 4 as well, at this time nothing is known about this particular update. Hopefully, we will get more info on the Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade for the Nexus 4 sooner rather than later.

Anyway, lucky owners of the Nexus 5 should expect the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to arrive on their devices any moment now, but as Google mentions, the complete rollout of the upgrade can take up to 3 weeks after availability.

You can either wait for the OTA update or flash the factory image, but there will be consequences

While you can manually check for Lollipop by heading to the System Updates section of the Nexus 5, keep in mind that this will not affect your chances of getting the update faster in any way.

In case you did not receive the update and you’re anxious to enjoy Android 5.0 Lollipop on your Nexus 5, there’s another way that you can upgrade to this version of the operating system.

Google released the Android 5.0 Lollipop factory image for Nexus 5, but this isn’t the same build as the final factory image available for consumer use, so bear that in mind before trying to flash it on your phone.

It’s also worth mentioning that you will lose all the data you have stored on the smartphone if you decide to go for the image factory method instead of waiting for the OTA update to arrive on your Nexus 5.

In case you flash the image factory, you won’t be receiving the OTA update and the only way to get the final version of Android 5.0 Lollipop on your Nexus 5 would be to flash the image factory of Android 4.4.4 KitKat and then wait for the Lollipop OTA update.
