Soon you’ll be able to buy low-cost Lollipop tablets

Android 5.0 Lollipop started rolling out not so long ago hitting some select devices, among which we can count the Nexus bunch of tablets and NVIDIA’s own Shield Tablet.

And as it happens after a new iteration of Android makes a debut into the wild, owners of smartphones and tablets are eagerly awaiting to be updated to the new build.

Most of us are expecting flagship devices to get the treatment first, but that doesn't mean Android 5.0 Lollipop will shy away from more budget offerings.

Last month we told you Chinese low-cost chip maker Rockchip had leaked a bunch of photographs showing a tablet product running Google’s latest and greatest. So it’s pretty obvious the company is gearing up to accommodate the update.

According to a press release, Rockchip is developing a version of Android 5.0 Lollipop based on the RK3288 platform.

Allwinner will soon jump on the Android 5.0 Lollipop bandwagon

And it appears this Chinese chip maker is not alone in its efforts. As Android Authority reports, Android 5.0 Lollipop will soon arrive on Allwinner processor-based tablets (and smartphones).

For example, we should expect an Allwinner A33 quad-core tablet to make a debut on the market sometime later this month, so keep our eyes open for anything resembling this description. It would be a sweet gift to find under the Christmas tree, wouldn't it?

But there’s more coming out in 2015 – when we should see products powered by Allwinner octa-core A80 and A83T SoCs. The A80 chip is constructed out of four ARM Cortex-A15 and four Cortex-A7 CPU cores fitted with the high-end PowerVR G6230 GPU.

As you can see in the video embedded below, Lollipop is functioning pretty smoothly on the Allwinner A80-powered tablets, so we should expect a lot of good things to come out of China next year.

Allwinner is planning to put its A80 chip into smart Android TVs too

Not only is the Chinese chip producer eyeing the mobile market, but it also hopes to get its hooks into the smart TV business. The octa-core A80 chip is said to be behind an upcoming Android TV product that will most likely run Android 5.0 Lollipop too.

Allwinner is an important player in the Asian tablet industry. Back in March, IDC reported that Allwinner pushed over 18 million tablet chips in Q4 of 2013. The number constitutes twice as much compared to rivals like Rockchip and thrice as much as Intel, a chip maker that’s still striving to make a name for itself on the Asian continent.
