Great news for the owners of a Motorola XOOM outside the United States, as the leading mobile phone maker has just announced the availability of a new software update for their devices, one that will bring the Android 3.1 Honeycomb platform into the mix.

The new operating system flavor was released into the wild last month, and already arrived on Motorola XOOM devices in the United States.

Now, it is being deployed on those non-US Motorola XOOM units out there, and should arrive on all devices in a matter of weeks.

Motorola Mobility has just announced the release of this platform update via its European Facebook account, and announced that users will be notified on the availability of the new software.

“The 3.1 update for Motorola XOOM outside the U.S. has started. Owners in Europe can expect updates over the next several weeks until the roll out is complete,” the company announced.

Moreover, the handset vendor unveiled that the new upgrade will bring a special treat into the mix, namely SD card activation.

“The 3.1 update for non-U.S. devices, in addition to many other improvements, also includes SD card activation. Release notes will be made available in each region, functionality varies by region,” Motorola noted.

Motorola XOOM was unveiled to the world in January this year, during the Consumer Electronics Show, and came to the market with a microSD memory card slot into the mix, but an inactive one, something that Motorola plans on changing with the new software release.

The tablet PC comes with a 10.1-inch touchscreen display on the front, and with a dual-core 1GHz application processor packed beneath it, in addition to 1GB of RAM, dual cameras with HD video recording capabilities, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, as well as GPS receiver.

The device also comes with support for applications and services, as well as with the ability to deliver a great web browsing experience with support for Adobe's Flash Player.
