Mobile phone carrier Vodafone Australia has just announced the release of a software update for one of the high-end handsets on its airwaves, the Nexus S by Samsung, bringing the OS on it up to version 2.3.4.

In other words, the wireless carrier has just started to deliver the Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread operating system flavor to its Nexus S users, offering them the possibility to enjoy the brand new features the update is meant to bring to them.

In a recent post on their blog, Vodafone Australia announced the roll-out of the OS update, and also provided some info on what the software would include.

The main new feature that this OS upgrade is set to bring forth would be the ability to use Google Talk with video and voice chat, as can be seen in the video embedded at the bottom of this article.

“Talk is Google’s instant messaging and audio and video chat service. You can use it to communicate in real time with other people who also use Google Talk, on another Android tablet or phone or on a computer,” the wireless services provider explains.

As soon as the new software update is available for them, users would see on their devices a small notification informing them on the software's availability.

When taping on this notification, users would be informed on the availability of a Nexus S System Update Gingerbread MR 2.3.4, which weighs in at 12MB.

“This OTA will update your Nexus S to Gingerbread MR2 (2.3.4). The update contains an important security fix and several other fixes. This update also enables video chat through gTalk,” the information screen should read.

Users should download the file in a strong 3G coverage zone, Vodafone notes, adding that the update is expected to keep the files on users' handsets unmodified.

“Everything will remain the same once the phone has rebooted. You will see the addition of gTalk to your apps,” the wireless carrier continues.

The company also announced that the owners of a Nexus One device on the Vodafone network in Australia should taste the new software update in the near future as well.

“We’ve been informed by Google that Nexus One users will start receiving notifications to update their firmware to Gingerbread soon,” Vodafone concludes.
