An official test build

With Google already pushing out the official Android 2.2 Froyo software update for the owners of a Nexus One out there, Verizon Wireless customers who are also users of a DROID by Motorola had all the reasons to be envious. The official software update for their devices won't become available anytime soon, though they can try out leaked test builds that made it into the wild not too long ago.

The recently spotted Android 2.2 Froyo build FRF84B is said to be an official build, though it hasn't been delivered publicly yet. Only a test build, meant to ensure that things are put in order before the official Android 2.2 update is being deployed on DROID units out there, the FRF84B build leaked into the wild, and can be installed on handsets that were rooted too, a recent article on BGR reports.

Of course, since this is not the solution Motorola, Verizon and Google are rolling-out to DROID owners out there, chances are that not all features would work as they should be, which means that users might consider waiting for the official update to arrive. Moreover, in case something goes wrong during the installation process, the warranty might be voided; another reason to keep away from the leaked build, especially if one does not know exactly what the process is all about.

Recently, Motorola and Verizon announced that the DROID by Motorola is expected to receive an update to Android 2.2 before the end of the summer, and that the newly launched DROID X would also enjoy the solution. No specific release date was unveiled, but some of the latest rumors around the Internet suggested that DROID should taste Froyo in the second half of July. A short way to benefit from the enhancements Android 2.2 includes, that's for sure. In case there are some who can hardly wait for the update, the leaked FRF84B build should prove to be an option.
