But Sony also has plans to revive the platform

An analyst talking to CasualGaming.biz claims the PSP is getting killed by Apple's iPod touch by the day. The "expert" cites the thousands of titles available in the App Store, as well as the platform's "rounded corners" as strong points of the Apple iPod touch over Sony's portable console.

"The iPod Touch is rapidly becoming the portable media player of choice amongst a younger audience, exactly the place that Sony wanted to be with the PSP," the analyst told CasualGaming.biz. "But the iPod doesn't have expensive processors or a unique format disc like the UMD; it is an easy-to-use device that offers consumers their music, podcasts, short-form video and accessible games on the move and in my opinion, will be the final nail in the PSP's coffin," he added.

Destructoid's Dale North picked up on the story to take a few blows at the "silly" analyst's assertions which, quite frankly, don't resonate with our view of the iPod touch either. The editor's discontent is obvious - "Lovell continues to list other silly reasons why Apple's devices are better than Sony's. He actually cites 'rounded corners' as another reason."

This analyst may have the wrong picture here, but is it so impossible that Apple's iPhone / iPod touch will indeed triumph in the portable gaming market? Thanks to the ever increasing number of games and the intuitive touchscreen interface, the two Apple devices have caught the eye of every kind of gamer on the planet, from the most casual to the hardcore.

Moreover, if we're to compare the two most popular portable consoles today – the Nintendo DS and Sony's PSP –  and acknowledge that the touch-capable device is kicking major PSP behind, we wouldn't (just yet) dismiss the possibility of iPod touch becoming king one day. The reasons cited by the analyst, though, we would.

Also worth noting is that Sony has a few great PS3 titles ready to be ported onto the PSP, while ongoing rumors of a revised version of the handheld offer a high degree of credibility.

So, what's your prognosis, gamer?
