In a new report, DFC Intelligence predicts that 2014 will be dominated by the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena genre on the PC, while Massively Multiplayer Online titles will show first signs of a long-term decline.

The company predicts that the value of the PC gaming market will be over 25 billion dollars (19 billion Euros), which is an increase over the value that the research firm first predicted in 2013.

The report claims that core gamers are at the moment willing to spend more money than ever because there’s an increasing variety of gaming experiences that they can choose from.

DFC Intelligence says that “the top titles of 2012 continued to do well in 2013 and new titles like Battlefield 4 and Total War: Rome II had solid performances.”

The biggest earner in the PC space for last year was League of Legends, from Riot Games, and DOTA 2, from Valve, led the market when growth is taken into account.

The MMO market has declined and is now worth less than the first-person shooter genre.

According to DFC Intelligence, the launch of the Xbox One from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 from Sony is actually having a positive impact on the PC market because it allows companies to create and promote cross-platform games like The Elder Scrolls Online, Grand Theft Auto V and Titanfall.

The Escapist quotes analyst David Cole as saying that, “I think the biggest item of note is the synergy now between console and PC. We actually think the launch of the new console systems will help lift the PC game business because there is large overlap between console and PC gamers and it becomes another platform for developers.”

The PC market this year should also get a boost from the official launch of the SteamOS, the Valve haptic controller and the hardware delivered by partners.
