What was believed to be an attempt to infect 100,000 computers proved to be a much bigger operation, since approximately 1.5 million computers were involved in a botnet.

A botnet is a collection of computers infected with a worm which puts the system under the worm creator's control without the owner's knowledge.

The botnets are controlled by users whose purpose is to launch DoS attacks or to send enormous quantities of spam.

According to vnunet.com, the Dutch police have operated three arrests this month, one of the accused being charged with extortion against an American corporation. The other two men are accused of illegally accessing computers, destroying automated networks and installing adware and spyware elements.
