Amazon.com have updated their iPhone app to add the ability to scan a barcode to instantly search the Amazon catalog. The feature is currently only available on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS running iOS 4, the retailer confirmed via an iTunes update.

Users of the Amazon Mobile app can use their iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch to quickly search, shop, compare prices, read reviews, and make purchases on Amazon.com via a simple, yet elegant, interface.

Customers get full access to their existing cart, wish lists, payment and shipping options, order history, 1-Click (R) settings, and Prime membership benefits, while all purchases are routed through Amazon’s secure servers.

It works the same as on your desktop computer.

The Amazon iOS app also includes an experimental feature called "Amazon Remembers", which allows iPhone and iPod touch users to employ the camera on their device to create a visual list of things they want to remember.

The retailer explains how customers are supposed to use the feature, saying “The photos you take from the app are stored on both the Amazon Mobile app and Amazon’s website.”

“If the item you want to remember is a product, Amazon Remembers will even try to find a product similar to your photo for sale on the web,” Amazon adds. “If we do, we’ll send you an e-mail alert and post the result along with the photo.”

Skipping over the list of key features, which everyone can view at the app’s iTunes App Store page, here’s how Amazon lists the changes implemented in version 1.2.8 of the Amazon Mobile app for iOS:
