In the case of the tablets, that goes for both the 7-inch and 8.9-inch models

Software updates can go a long way towards making devices more fun and easy to use, so Amazon is using the idea quite liberally.

Most recently, we have learned that the online store will send Android updates to the Kindle Fire second-generation tablet, the Kindle Fire HD 7 tablet, and the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 tablet.

Various features will be added to the three devices, the tablets most of all. Devices will get the update automatically, but owners can force it if they want.

"X-Ray for Textbooks" is one thing: it allows users to access the most important terms and concepts, with glossary definitions and links to relevant pages.

"Time To Read" is another. It calculates how much more time will take to finish a book, based on reading speed. Books with audio and video clips will be supported from now on too.
