At least one study had consumers generally leaning more towards the 7-inch model

The Amazon Kindle Fire tablet hasn't been out for very long, but already it seems to have gained a special place in the heart of both people who have it and those who don't.

According to a study conducted by Retrevo, more users are interested in the 7-inch Amazon Kindle Fire than the iPad.

Granted, the percentage difference was fairly low, but it is still noteworthy, knowing how much longer the iPad has been on sale in comparison.

Looks like the $199 (146 Euro) price really is doing wonders, though this has been more than obvious ever since Amazon said it had to start making millions more because of pre-orders.

Retrevo asked people multiple questions, like whether or not they knew what the Kindle Fire is or if they have any intention to buy a tablet this holiday season.

There was a bit of confusion about just what the Fire was, though: 35% of people asked what the Amazon Kindle Fire was thought it was an e-reader, while 32% correctly identified it as a tablet and another 32% said they didn't know.

At the end of it, it was a relatively close thing, but the Amazon device did come out on top.

27% of those who already own a tablet said they intended to buy it regardless, while 20% said they intended to get an iPad.

Meanwhile, those who didn't already have a slate also favored Amazon's small item (12%) while iPad hopefuls were 10%.

Amazon's device will have to impress in terms of image quality, battery life and overall performance if it is to continue as a favorite.

It has another advantage too, namely timing. It showed up just early enough that people can include it in their holiday plans while the iPad 3 isn't going to appear until next year and the iPad 2 is already a year old.

NVIDIA did just launch the Kal-El 'five-core' tablet platform though, so the ASUS Transformer Prime, though more expensive ($499 / €361) could throw a wedge in things.
