Alltel Wireless announced that it is the premiere wireless carrier in the United States to offer the SCH-u420 slim slider handset from Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung).

The u420 is the first handset from Alltel Wireless to feature newly enhanced Axcess Shop capability, enabling customers to download rich content and data applications such as XM Radio and Axcess Mobilcast, ringtones, games and more. The new Axcess Shop, built on QUALCOMM's uiOne technology, features such applications as World Series of Poker Texas Hold'em by Glu Mobile, Realtone Jukebox by 9Squared, and Axcess Wallpaper Powered by Digital Orchid.

"The u420 from Samsung is a slim, very stylish slider that will appeal to customers who are looking for a phone that combines a distinctive design with high-tech, easy-to-use features," said Wade McGill, senior vice president of product management for Alltel.

Samsung's u420 features a VGA camera, hands-free Bluetooth functionality as well as speakerphone, voice-activated dialing and BREW Client 3.1.4. It has picture, text and instant messaging capabilities, and can display text in both English and Spanish. The phone is also equipped with Axcess Web, which enables customers to surf the Internet. Additional subscription fees and/or airtime charges will apply for accessing the Internet.

Beginning this end of the week, Alltel customers can purchase the SCH-u420 for $49.99 after a $30 mail-in rebate and get a second one for free. This discounted price is available to new customers on two-year service agreements as well as to existing eligible customers on qualifying rate plans.
