Super Mario 3D Land is the first full-fledged game in the series to arrive on the Nintendo 3DS handheld and one of the producers working on the game says that the experience is as close as possible to that offered on the Wii.

Yoshiaki Koizumi, who is a producer working on the newly released Super Mario 3D Land, told Kotaku that, “When we created Super Mario Galaxy, we were trying to create the types of surprises and fresh experiences that you would have on a vacation. For Super Mario 3D Land, which is a portable game that people can play away from home, we added features like the ability to complete a stage in two to three minutes.”

He added, “The portable and console Mario games share the same core, namely, the fun of freely controlling and becoming Mario, and in that regard, there is no distinction between the two types of games.”

Nintendo has always seen Mario powered games as crucial to the development of their hardware platforms and a lot of fans asked the company why a game featuring the well-known characters was not available on the Nintendo 3DS on launch day.

The most probable answer is that the Japanese hardware maker rushed to bring the 3DS to the market as soon as possible and the development teams failed to keep up with the hardware push.

Super Mario 3D Land combines two dimensional and three dimensional stages and allows the player to guide the character through a number of stages as he once again tries to get Princess Peach back from Bowser.

The game includes a number of power-ups and mechanics taken from previous Mario games and reviewers praised the way it uses the unique three dimensional features of the 3DS.

It is widely believed that at the moment Shigeru Miyamoto is working on a new Mario game that will be launched on the Wii U during the summer of 2012.
