The “green” phase is moving on, so Dell's switching its focus back to performance

The Alienware brand is the one that Dell invented acquired, a long time ago, for its computers that are at once good looking 9with alien themes) and more or less overpowered. It's the X51 that is getting an upgrade now.

Unlike other gaming computers on the market, pre-configured or otherwise, the Alienware line tends to be small, in comparison anyway.

It's like Dell is trying to see how much raw horsepower, so to speak, it can cram into tiny frames. Sure, there are the standard 15.6-inch or larger laptops, and full-size desktops, but there is more interest in miniature packages than in the case of other companies.

Thus, it's not a total shock to see the X51 getting an update, despite it being small enough to be mistaken for a media player, but for the clear alien head logo on the front.

Long story short, Dell has added the Radeon R9 270X graphics card to the list of hardware components that can be included in the system.

Only the $1,000 / €1,000 Alienware X51 model will actually feature it though, and you'll have to assent to getting 8 GB of RAM, a 1 TB HDD and a Core i7-4770 central processing unit from Intel too.

So that means that the price gets an extra $100 / €100 added on top of it, leading to $1,099 / €1,099 or thereabouts.

Not that gamers are likely to consider other configurations superior to this one, especially at that price. At least not in such a small package.

Previously, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 was used, or the GeForce GTX 760 Ti (OEM card).

The newest configuration of Dell's gaming computer is called Alienware X51 R2 (Revision 2 as it were) and has the product page all set.

The default operating system is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, but Windows (several versions available) can be installed too, for a fee.
