This weekend retail chain Aldi unleashed its budget tablet, the Medion LifeTab E7316, into the world priced at only £79.99 / $131 / €96.

Obviously, the slate was designed to compete with Tesco’s already famous tablet, the Hudl, that managed to sell 300,000 units in just two months.

Now Aldi has announced that the initial batch of Medion LifeTabs has been sold out in two days, adding that the tablet was offered under a “specialbuy” promotion which was only available while supply last, reports ItProPortal.

Research Director for Mobile Devices, Francisco Jeronimo commented on the Aldi’s announcement by saying that “the biggest selling point here is definitely the price,” which was a bit obvious.

However, he added that “the larger screen size gives entertainment on the move to users, which is becoming very popular among commuters and children.”

“However, most parents don't want to spend £300-£500 on a device that will mainly be used to play games, to watch movies and a few other educational applications.” Hence the Medion Lifetab is expected to appeal to lots of families with children.

Back in October, another supermarket giant Argos, introduced its own wallet-friendly MyTablet offering. IDC seems to believe that these cheap slates are going to gain a lot of tablet market share in the holiday season.

The firm reports that six million tablets were sold in the first half of 2013 and highlights the fact that a lot of customers shop with a budget in mind, when it comes to tablets. 25% of slates shipped in the UK between July and September where slates priced £120 / $197 / €143 and below, with the trend expected to gain in proportion in the year to come.
