Researchers say low amounts of alcohol have an anti-inflammatory effect

A team of King's College London researchers writing in the journal Rheumatology maintain that, according to their investigations, consuming alcohol every once in a while does nothing to affect one's overall health condition.

Quite the contrary, this habit might help keep rheumatoid arthritis at bay, sources report.

This conclusion was reached after it was discovered that people who consumed moderate amounts of alcohol on a fairly regular basis were about 50% less likely to be affected by said medical condition than those who had never consumed alcohol or consumed it too rarely.

The researchers suspect that alcohol contains chemical compounds that have an anti-inflammatory effect, hence its ability to slash rheumatoid arthritis risk.

“Alcohol intake is inversely associated with ACPA-positive rheumatoid arthritis, suggesting a protective effect. But further research is needed to confirm this relationship,” reads the researchers’ report on the matter at hand.
