Alcatel-Lucent announced it has signed a multi-million Euro contract with Celcom, a leading Malaysian telecommunications service provider, to expand the mobile operator's GSM network. The expanded network will enable Celcom to provide wireless coverage to more than 90 percent of the northern, southern and eastern parts of the Malaysian Peninsula.

This expansion project is the latest in a series of mobile solution deployments undertaken by Celcom and Alcatel-Lucent. Under the terms of the agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will deliver its end-to-end GSM/GPRS/EDGE solutions. The technology to be deployed includes the Twin TRX, a recent addition to the Alcatel-Lucent portfolio that doubles base-station capacity to meet the requirements of users in high-density urban environments and offers a wider coverage range making it well suited for less populated rural environments, while reducing power consumption by up to 30 percent.

"Celcom wants to provide its customers access to useful wireless service no matter where they live in Malaysia, and the solution Alcatel-Lucent has developed for them will extend their reach and their ability to handle the high traffic areas of Malaysia's major cities", said Frederic Rose, President of Alcatel-Lucent's business in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific. "Our deeply committed team is leveraging our comprehensive wireless portfolio and depth of expertise to continue to provide Celcom with the most innovative solutions in the industry to help enhance the variety and quality of services the mobile operator can provide to its subscribers."
