EA Sports, the division of Electronic Arts that is developing the football simulation FIFA 12, has announced that it has recruited Alan Smith, a former England striker and well-known broadcaster, to be one of the voices providing in-game commentary for this year's game.

FIFA 12 will include more than 10,000 lines of dialogue and the developers are hoping that this is enough to keep the diversity up and create a good atmosphere for those who play long sessions of the game.

A second commentary team recording lines is made up by Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend and will be in charge of all tournament matches, using a different style and a number of lines closer to those used in real world matches.

David Rutter, who is the senior producer working on FIFA 12, has stated, “Alan will bring a fresh, new perspective and insight to FIFA 12, working alongside the trusted and well-known voice of Martin Tyler. As one of the top-tier broadcasters on the UK football scene, he brings enormous knowledge and expert analysis to the game so that we can deliver the most authentic FIFA experience this year.”

The new commentator himself added, “The natural chemistry that Martin and I have developed working live matches for TV has transferred very well to the virtual broadcast booth. I’m really looking forward to FIFA fans hearing our work this fall as we bring all the match day emotion and excitement to this year’s game.”

FIFA 12 has been chosen the Best Sports Game award at the E3 2011 trade show and I also got some hands-on time with it.

The game is set to be launched on September 27 in North America and three days later in the rest of the world, arriving on the PS3, the Xbox 360, the PC, the PS3, the Nintendo Wii and a number of mobile devices.
