Ahead of Windows Server 2008's official launch on February 27, 2008, at the Heroes Happen Here event in Los Angeles, Microsoft applauded the extensive support from independent software vendors for the latest server platform. According to the Redmond company's perspective, if clapping the Service Pack 1 label on Windows Server 2008 is merely the proof of the synchronization with Windows Vista, and not a marketing scheme, highlighting the support enjoyed by the successor of Windows Server 2003 from the get-go is undoubtedly a move designed to catalyze adoption. Microsoft revealed that hundreds of ISVs have started developing business applications that will feature support for the latest Windows server operating system.

"We've been working with the partner community to help ensure that their products take full advantage of the capabilities and features of Windows Server 2008. We are delighted to see that approximately 80 applications have already been certified by key ISVs, and that number continues to grow. Our top priority is to provide our partners with the best development environment possible so they can address new business opportunities and bring differentiated solutions to their customers," said Bob Visse, senior director of the Windows Server Marketing Group at Microsoft.

In a move similar to the marketing strategy that accompanied Windows Vista to the market, Microsoft has cooked up a certification program for Windows Server 2008. In this context, the Redmond company is offering the "Works With" Windows Server 2008 and "Certified For" Windows Server 2008 tests, for products designed to integrate to a lesser or a higher degree with the server platform. Product testing, evaluation and certification on Windows Server 2008 debuted while the operating system was still in beta stage, a scenario which permits Microsoft to have no less than 40 partners making their own announcements at the "Heroes Happen Here" launch event for Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008.

"The Windows Software Logo Program was redesigned for 2008 based on partner and IT professional feedback into a program that is more achievable, affordable and valuable for the ecosystem. The Windows Software Logo Program has two engagement tiers: Works with and Certified for. Works with Windows Server 2008 includes 20 test cases that help determine baseline compatibility with Windows Server 2008. Certified for Windows Server 2008 includes approximately 100 test cases and defines mission-critical line-of-business applications that have passed Microsoft best practices for security features, availability, reliability and Windows fundamentals," Microsoft stated.
