Singer is too mature and wise to be really this young, conspiracy theorists say

Conspiracy theorists, go grab your tinfoil hats because there’s a new debate ranging online right now: according to many birthers / age truthers, singing sensation Lorde has been lying about her age all along because she can’t possibly be only 17.

Lorde hails from New Zealand and is one of the most talented and critically acclaimed singers of the new generation. Her latest single, “Royals,” has been getting massive amounts of airplay last year and also landed her 2 Grammy wins this year’s awards gala.

She also performed at the 2014 Grammy Awards and viewers were so impressed with the jazzy, stripped down number that they immediately concluded that she couldn’t possibly be as young as she said she was.

Gawker has summed up some of the most skeptic reactions on social media, and even plays into the controversy by saying that the birth certificate that emerged online is probably a fake. Yes, indeed, someone went to the trouble of digging around for Lorde’s birth certificate to see whether she’s been lying about her age.

She didn’t: she might have an amazingly deep voice and she might be more mature than other girls her age (and yes, she might also look older than 17 as well), but Lorde is as young as she says she is. Still, it’s funny that people would doubt that.

Speaking of how mature she is compared to most 17-year-olds, after her double Grammy win, Lorde took out an entire advertising page in a national newspaper to post a handwritten note to her fans, without whom she would have gotten as far as she did.

“It was a crazy day and my friends and family over here are still freaking out. I just want to say thank you for the time you've given me these past 14 months,” she wrote. Above the note, she’d drawn a Grammy award.
