People who like to play games but need to go from place to place often finally have a reason to rejoice: the 7-inch Wikipad gaming tablet is up for sale, or rather will be on June 11.

WikiPad is a queer thing. A 7-inch tablet, one would mistake it for a common slate if not for the dock that it ships with.

Said dock comes with the type of gaming controls one would expect to find on a PlayStation or Xbox gamepad.

Originally, WikiPad was going to be a 10-inch tablet, but pricing and bulkiness issues postponed those plans.

The 7-inch WikiPad is, shall we say, a test drive as it were. WikiPad is testing the waters with it, in anticipation of the larger model on the way.

"There is no other mobile device on the market that possesses Wikipad's unique functionality and versatility and all available with full warranty and customer support at an entry level price point," said Fraser Townley, president of Sales at Wikipad Inc.

WikiPad's 7-inch screen has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and hides a Tegra 3 SoC, 1 GB of RAM, and 16 GB NAND Flash storage.

It also has 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.0 wireless support, plus GPS, a microSD card slot and a front camera.

Of course, it would have been crippling if it lacked these things. As for software, the Android 4.1 operating system runs the device.

When sales start on June 11, the price will be of $249.99 / €191 – 249.99.

"The launch of the Wikipad 7 tablet signals a transformative turning point in the direction of the mobile gaming industry. Wikipad's tablet combines the latest range of features found in a premium Android tablet together with the unrivaled console video game experience only available with a gamepad," said Matthew Joynes, chairman of Wikipad Inc.
