This would have happened eventually for sure, but it was a bit fast

Ultra-high definition TVs, with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, may not be a new invention anymore, but they haven't exactly been out for long either. Just over half a year really.

That is why I wouldn't really have expected UHD panels to become the focus of LCD suppliers so soon.

Nevertheless, that is what has happened, according to IHS iSuppli analysts.

According to iSuppli, shipments in 2013 and the years ahead will be at three-digit and high-double-digit rates. By 2017, they will even reach 20.8 million units.

The main reason why LCD makers have shifted focus to UHD is the low ASP (average selling price) of normal TV LCDs.

It's always good to have a money-bringing premium item, and UHD will become that item for the foreseeable future. Of course, even UHD prices will come down, but they will still be higher than those of all other display types.
