The rover encountered a problem with its main computer

NASA has announced that it has managed to get the Curiosity rover out of "safe mode" and into normal operation mode, after a switch between the two redundant computers aboard the rover. A memory issue caused the rover to switch over to its secondary main computer.

However, the switch also meant the rover went into "safe mode" with minimal activity. The team has now gotten the computer fully operational; however, it will still have to update it with data on Curiosity's current state before it can take over entirely.

The plan is to have the rover fully operational and starting work again next week. The memory fault came at the worst time, as the rover was just about to analyze the first ever rock samples recovered from below the surface.

The cause of the initial problem is still unknown, but NASA is trying to get to the bottom of it and have that computer running again as a backup.
