Staff at Zoo Osnabrück have no idea if the seal pup is a boy or a girl

On July 4, a 14-year-old seal at Zoo Osnabrück in Germany gave birth to a healthy and annoyingly adorable pup.

It appears that the mother seal is very protective of her offspring. Neither zoo keepers, nor the pup's father have thus far been given permission to come anywhere near it.

Hence the fact that nobody has any idea whether the seal pup is a boy or a girl, Zoo Borns reports.

Vets keeping a close eye on the seal pup and its mother say that they are both active and very attentive, so the birth probably went as smooth as possible.

“We are very pleased that the birth went so well. The baby is very attentive and swims very well,” head staff member Kirsten Bischoff tells the press.

They estimate that the seal pup weighs about 22-26 pounds (approximately 10-12 kg), which is about one tenth of its mother's weight.
