14 DAY TRIAL // About two months ago, a female panda living in captivity at Zoo Vienna in Austria delivered an adorable male cub. Keepers say that the baby panda is thriving and that a few days ago, he opened his eyes for the first time.
“Panda babies are born blind. Between 30 and 45 days after birth their eyes slowly begin to open. One to two weeks later they have opened completely although perception is still restricted to light-dark contrasts,” zoo Director Dagmar Schratter said, as cited by Zoo Borns.
Despite having opened his eyes, the panda cub is yet to figure out how to use his limbs to get around.
His caretakers say that, every once in a while, he tries to crawl on the floor but that, more often than not, he merely manages to tumble, gives up and returns to his nest.
The same source tells us that the panda cub now weighs about 6.5 pounds (3 kilograms). He is expected to go on public display in a few months.
