Since Adobe’s Reader X (10.1.1) and Acrobat X (10.1.1) could be protected against the recently discovered vulnerabilities that allowed an attacker to take control of an affected system by using them in Protected Mode and Protected View, the company released security updates for the products only on January 10, 2012, when the quarterly updates were scheduled.

The latest updates address weaknesses found in Adobe Reader X (10.1.1) and earlier versions for Windows and Macintosh, and the ones discovered in Adobe Acrobat X (10.1.1) and earlier versions for the same operating systems.

Adobe has also made available updates for Adobe Reader and Acrobat, the 9.4.7 and earlier variants.

Memory corruption and heap corruption vulnerabilities are resolved to prevent a cybercriminal from executing arbitrary code.

The next quarterly update is scheduled for April 10, 2012, but in the meantime, customers are advised to update their products to the 10.1.2 and 9.5 versions to make sure they’re secured.
