Adobe Systems has released a new version of its Media Player, Adobe Media Player 1.6 Beta. The new release is immediately available for free download, and requires Adobe AIR Runtime to work.

Adobe Media Player is built on Adobe AIR technology. AIR is built on Flash, a client environment for running rich media applications and content. AIR handles communications between Adobe Media Player and Mac OS X. With this application, Adobe's player can store and access your downloaded media files and user data when you are online and offline.

"The fusion of TV and the Internet"- this is how Adobe described its Media Player released in April, this year. John Loiacono, senior vice president of Creative Solutions at Adobe, touts it as "a merger of TV Guide and DVR for Internet video content." The cross-platform player makes great use of the existing Adobe Flash technology, and supports downloaded and streamed media of up to full-screen HD resolution, according to the company.

To install Adobe Media Player, you must follow a few easy steps. First off you need to download the actual application using the link provided below. Once it's downloaded, double click to open the package, and click the Install Adobe Media Player button to install the media player. AIR is automatically installed as part of the Adobe Media Player package.

Adobe Media Player can play both FLV files and F4V files, as well as several H.264 video file formats. Those include MOV, MP4, MP4V, M4V, 3GP, 3GPP2, 3G2. You can also add SWF files on your computer to My Favorites > My Personal Videos, and play the SWF files in Adobe Media Player. Mac requirements for Adobe's Media Player are as follows:

Mac OS (PowerPC) PowerPC G5 1.8GHz or faster processor; Mac OS X v10.4.9–10.4.11 or 10.5.1–10.5.2; 1GB of RAM and 64MB of VRAM.

Mac OS (Intel) Intel Core Duo 1.33GHz or faster processor; Mac OS X v10.4.9–10.4.11 or 10.5.1–10.5.2; 1GB of RAM and 64MB of VRAM.

Remember, Adobe AIR Runtime, which is required to use the player, is automatically installed as part of Adobe Media Player installation. If you do not want AIR on your computer, do not install Adobe Media Player.
