Eric Hirshberg, the chief executive officer of the publishing arm at Activison, says that the coming Call of Duty video game from Sledgehammer is mainly developed for the Xbox One from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 from Sony.

He tells IGN that, "anyone who developed a cross-generational game last year had to deal with the fact that the technology of the next-gen platforms was still coming into focus and changing quite a bit during the development process…. Now that we have the next-gen hardware out in the marketplace and solid, that is our primary development."

This probably means that gamers who are looking to get the full Call of Duty experience will have to abandon their current-gen devices and buy new hardware before the fall of this year.

In its financial report, the team at Activision has announced that Sledgehammer is working on this year's installment of the long-running first-person shooter franchise.

At the same time, the entire universe is moving to a new three-year development cycle, which also includes titles created by Infinity Ward and Treyarch.

The Activision CEO adds, "with the level of content we were putting in the games, it became a real horse race each and every time to get everything done that we wanted to get done, we’ve got more capabilities [with next-gen] than ever before to play with and we want to make sure our developers have the time to innovate, iterate, to bring the best creative vision and the most possible polish to each and every game."

Sledgehammer has not offered any sort of details on the new Call of Duty, but it will probably use an entirely new game universe, with no connection to either Black Ops 2 or Ghosts.

Activision says that it will introduce some innovative gameplay to the first-person genre.
