U.S. Navy officials report an active shooter situation on the Washington Navy Yard in D.C.

The message comes via their official Twitter account and the police are currently in the area, looking for the suspect.

A police officer was shot at around 8:20 a.m. inside one of the buildings on the Navy base. The historical base is located on the Anacostia River in Southeast Washington.

Multiple shots were fired and at least four people were injured, police and fire department officials inform.

“#BREAKING: #USNavy confirms 3 shots fired 820am at @NAVSEA HQs BLDG 197. More to follow. #NavyYardShooting,” a first tweet by Navy officials reads.

“Please stay clear of the Washington Navy Yard and surrounding area this morning,” they added in another tweet.

People inside the building have been asked not to move. There are reportedly 3,000 workers in the complex, identified as BLDG 197.

“#BREAKING: Still active shooter. More base police entering building. Approx. 3000 people work in bldg. #NavyYardShooting,” a Navy online spokesperson mentions.

They identify the location of the shooting as NavSea, the headquarters of the Naval Sea Systems Command on Isaac Hull Avenue.

According to a report by Gawker, three people that have been injured are currently in critical condition.

One of the victims was found on the roof of the Naval Sea building, and two more were inside when police arrived at the scene.

A spokesperson for the Washington DC fire department detailed that a fourth victim was outside, in front of the building.

“Everyone to this point told to shelter in place as police continue to search for this armed gunman,” reporters for WUSA 9 write on Twitter.
