Even though the words flash drive usually act as the name for those small, stick-like storage devices one plugs into an USB port, there are other sorts of flash devices, such as DOM, two of which were just unveiled by AMP.

Active Media Products is one of the multitude of companies dealing in storage units based on NAND Flash memory chips.

Among other things, it has a wide collection of flash drive units with different speed ratings, capacities and form factors.

Besides those aimed at consumers and featuring the USB standard, AMP (which actually focuses more on small form factor solid state drives) also has products for the embedded market.

Its newest inventions are this very sort of flash devices, DOM (Disk-on-Module) units as they are called.

They are two in number and feature a low profile design, plus the PATA interface, making them best suited for servers, embedded computing installations and other industrial applications.

They utilize MLC (multi-level cell) NAND Flash memory chips and can read and write data at speeds of up to 80 MB/s and 38 MB/s, respectively.

"These products show AMPs leadership and continued commitment to developing extremely small and reliable embedded storage solutions," said Jerry Thomson, Active Media Products VP of Sales.

The Type 3 and Type 4 DOMs are available in capacities of 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB, their pries being of $65, $85, $160 and $325. A one-year warranty is offered alongside each of them.

The Type-4 models have an industry standard 44-pin female IDE connector, while Type-3 models have an industry standard 40-pin female IDE connector.

It should probably be noted that these newcomer practically make AMP's series of IDE DOMs complete.

Finally, Active Media Products threw in a write protection switch, for defense against file corruption, inadvertent file deletion and viruses.
