Taking advantage of the 2011 Mobile World Congress, which is underway right now in Barcleona, Spain, Acer has introduced a new low-power portable computer dubbed the Aspire One D257 that differentiates itself from all the company's previous netbook models by featuring a brand new design.

In fact this is the first major redesign of the Aspire One series that Acer has undertaken in about two years, so it's quite a big deal for the Taiwanese company.

Compared to the previous Aspire One models, the new D257 features a new touchpad that makes use of a single-button design, a more attractive front lid as well as softer, less rigid lines that make the whole netbook look more dynamic and compact.

No details regarding the hardware specifications of the netbook were released together with the pictures, but taking a look at the available connection ports, it becomes clear that the D257 doesn't support high definition video playback as it lacks an HDMI port.

This means that the netbook isn't powered by an AMD Fusion APU, making me believe it is only a redesigned Aspire One D255, as it packs the same external port arrangement.

For those of you that don't remember, the D255 is powered by a dual-core Intel Atom N550 processor, which runs at 1.5GHz, and comes with 1GB of DDR3 RAM memory, a 250GB hard drive and Intel GMA 3150 graphics.

The 10.1-inch LCD panel is able to display 1024x600 pixels and connectivity is provided by a 10/100 Ethernet port and a built-in 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi card.

Compared to other netbooks that share similar features, the D255 distinguished itself thanks to the inclusion of the Android 2.1 operating system which is available as a dual-boot option, next to Windows 7 Starter.

No details regarding pricing and availability of the Acer Aspire One D257 were disclosed. (via Notebook Italia)
