The sharp drop in expected desktop shipments activated the alert. Acer needs to seriously change tactics in order to recover.

The company is still part of the desktop PC market, but every year it seems to drift just a little bit away from the center.

In 2012, it shipped 7-8 million, and its 2013 projected shipment level is a much weaker 4-5 million.

And since its laptop performance isn't at an all-time high either, it needs to remedy this.

That is why it has hired a new chief for the desktop business, a former vice president of Lite-On IT, according to Digitimes.

It remains to be seen if demand rises for its standard systems and gateway desktop products. There really are no guarantees anyone can give at this point.
