Has no short-term plans for such a product

Last week saw the emergence of a particularly intriguing report regarding Acer and the possibility of its Computex lineup to include a certain type of product. To be exact, a rumor somehow emerged, which stated that the Taiwanese company would take the opportunity to unveil the very first netbook running Google's Chrome OS. Needless to say, since such laptops are very highly anticipated, the web quickly entered an uproar, to the point where Acer saw the need to officially come out and speak on the matter.

Unfortunately, the company has not come as a herald of hope for the future. Instead, it has come to mercilessly crush all dreams of such a thing happening. In fact, the PC supplier quaintly published three sentences that made it completely clear that there would be no such product launches at Computex. The Chrome OS netbook-slaying sentence, which is part of the latest press release, is as follows:

“Despite recent rumors in the press regarding the launch of Chrome OS based netbooks at Computex, Acer today confirms that it has no short-term plans for such a product.”

On the bright side, hopefuls can find solace in the knowledge that Acer does intend to make a move in this area, eventually, because, “Google Chrome OS is without doubt an exciting product announcement and deserves [Acer's] full attention as well as an in-depth study of its potential from a consumer's perspective.”

The first Acer Chrome OS netbook is expected to be unveiled during the second half of the ongoing year. Competition will only be provided by ASUS, the sole other IT player known to have a Chrome OS mobile PC in mind. In the meantime, the former will “be following the development and progress of Google Chrome and the evolution of Google’s overall product strategy very closely.”
