Washington Navy Yard gunman Aaron Alexis has dodged a background check for clearance on Navy grounds by hiding things about his past.

He had been charged with a firearms offense in 2010, for shooting through a ceiling. He had also shot at someone's tires a few years before, while racing over an altercation with the owner.

While he lied about his record, the Washington Post has revealed that his employers conducted a thorough check and found out about the gun incidents.

When submitting his record to the Navy for clearance approval, they downplayed the charges and left out the tire shooting completely.

The clearance check has been performed by Falls Church government contractor, USIS. The federal Office of Personnel Management issued a statement relaying that the verification was carried out “in compliance with all investigative standards.”
