AU Optronics, Taiwan's largest manufacturer of thin TFT-LCD display panels, has unveiled two breakthrough technologies for mobile devices. These consist of a 2.2 inch transflective panel having the world's slimmest border of only 0.9 mm and a 2.7 inch panel with the world's highest contrast ratio of 2100:1. [admark=1]

Due to the increasing need for wide viewing angle in mobile displays, the border width for small-sized panel has become increasingly important. AU Optronics' 2.2 inch TFT-LCD panel has a border of 0.9 mm on both the right and left sides, half the size of current products currently on the market. In addition, the upper side border width can be reduced to 1.2 mm. The slimmer border design can increase the active area while maintaining the same high quality resolution.

In addition, as multimedia playing functions in portable electronic devices are gaining more popularity, high contrast ratio is also becoming an essential feature for small-sized displays. By using new domains-forming technology along with specific pixel structure design, AU Optronics' AMVA-mobile technology is able to maintain stable liquid crystal molecular directions and provide higher transmittance. Also, by utilizing Multi-domain Vertical Alignment design, the AMVA-mobile technology effectively restrains dark state light leakage and increases the aperture ratio, resulting in a higher contrast ratio of up to 2100:1. AMVA-mobile technology has been successfully applied on 2.7 inch mobile QVGA mobile displays well-suited for video calls and movie-playing.

AU Optronics has successfully implemented large-sized TFT-LCD technologies to small- and medium-sized displays, including AMVA-mobile technology - featuring features high contrast ratio and wide viewing angle; ASPD-mobile technology - that can improve response time to 4 ms gray-to-gray, especially useful when playing handheld video games; and APE-mobile technology - that can enhance the image contrast and reduce system power up to 50% and maintain image luminance.

The new TFT-LCD technologies will be showcased at Display Taiwan 2007, from 13 to 15 June, in Taipei.
