Headphone amplifiers can be really good additions to a turntable, especially if you're an ambitious DJ or music connoisseur, but they get even better when they have extra skills.

The product that ASUS has just launched definitely has extra skills, although the company made it sound as though the headphone amplifier part was the extra skill.

Apparently, the product is actually called Xonar Essence STU USB external digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and headphone amplifier, not the other way around.

Regardless, the gadget allows you to modify sound in many ways, with a 120dB signal to noise ratio (SNR).

The headphone amp is of 600ohm, while the frequency response is of 10 Hz to 48 KHz.

In layman terms, the Xonar Essence STU can act as an alternative, or complement, to Xonar Essence ST/STX sound cards.

Sales should start before the month is out for $399 / €399.
