According to some reports on the Internet, ASUS is planning its own ultrathin portable computer system that will likely compete with Apple's already famous MacBook Air. Said system could be part of the company's extensive range of netbook systems and provide users with a PC alternative to Apple's ultrathin portable MacBook. With the release, ASUS will join MSI, which has already introduced and showcased its range of X-Slim portable PCs, designed to take advantage of Intel's ULV platform.

The reports are still somewhat sketchy but predictable, as ASUS has been trying to provide its customers with a slim, ultra-portable PC ever since it released the Atom-based Eee S101 netbook. Although its design brought the S101 close to that of the MacBook Air, the system was based on a netbook-focused Atom processor, which isn't exactly known for its high level of performance. The rumored netbook, however, could be equipped with an Intel ULV processor, enabling a higher level of performance in a small and power-efficient package.

Details on said MacBook Air competitor coming from ASUS are yet to emerge. However, one can speculate that the company will try to go for an affordable system, especially if it wants to compete with the likes of Apple.

On the other side of things, the Cupertino, California-based Apple is also expected to debut its own netbook-like device, although such a system has failed to surface to the market so far. It is said that if Apple releases a netbook-like device, it doesn't plan to provide its users with a low-end system, such as most of those Atom-powered netbooks and nettops currently available on the market.

It's a well known fact that ASUS is planning to further expand its laptop market share, as the company aims to become a worldwide leading PC vendor. With an ultrathin MacBook Air competitor the company basically plans to expand its portable PC portfolio.
