On Wednesday, ARM announced officially the availability of the new ARM Mali-T604 Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), aimed at offering innovative and compelling visual computing to future devices.

According to the company, the new solution is capable of delivering to 5x performance improvement when compared to the current Mali graphics processors.

Moreover, the company notes that the new Mali-T604 can offer industry-leading graphics performance, which also boasting energy efficiency.

With the new Mali-T604, richer experiences are offered, unseen before in devices ranging from smartphones to high-end digital entertainment systems.

ARM also notes that the new Mali-T604 GPU is available for license by lead partners. One of the first companies to receive the solution is Samsung, who is already a licensee of the Mali graphic processor technology.

“Visual computing is driving the next generation of consumer electronics, as consumers and developers demand the highest levels of graphics performance,” said Lance Howarth, EVP and general manager, Media Processing Division, ARM.

“The tri-pipe architecture in the Mali-T604 provides both market leading compute functionality and high-performance graphics without compromise, enabling unequalled user experiences in energy-efficient consumer electronic devices.”

The scalable, multicore Mali-T604 GPU is also expected to rise the bar when it comes to visual computing in the consumer electronics segment, ARM notes, adding that it refers here to mobiles, tablets, DTVs and automotive infotainment.

The Mali-T604 GPU comes with innovative tri-pipe graphics architecture, through which it can address the demand for better computing performance in the next generation interactive user interfaces and gaming.

ARM's fourth-generation GPU is specifically designed to meet the needs of General Purpose computing on GPU (GPGPU) and extends API support to include full profile Khronos OpenCL and Microsoft DirectX,” the company announced.

“Support for GPGPU is becoming increasingly important for enhanced Augmented Reality applications and gesture recognition.”

The Mali-T604 GPU also comes with a 30 percent consumption reduction, while taking full benefit of ARM's Cache Coherent Interconnect (CCI-400) for delivering a memory coherent system with the new Cortex-A15 MPCore.
