TV on PC or Internet on TV?

After launching the 2 GB e-mail service, America Online comes up with yet another surprise. Thus, the provider's new website will offer two different web pages, a classical one and one containing video highlights.

This new concept, called "Video Hub", will allow the users to "watch what they want to watch, when they want to", says Jonathan Miller, AOL's CEO.

The borders between television and the Internet are already becoming a bit blurry, and it's pretty sure that, as computers start to become more and more important for each residence, the two media will eventually merge.

The major players on the Internet market, as for example Google, Yahoo and MSN are already engaged in a fierce competition in this field. And the most important area of interest is, of course, the advertising business. And that's because, as the public's attention is slowly turning towards the Internet, so are the major advertising companies.

Charlene Li, an analyst for Forrester, thinks that in 5 years' time, the same television programs will be available on the PC, the TV set or any other future receivers.

"More PCs moving into the living room is making this possible," said Mrs. Li. "Who's to say we won't have a Yahoo channel on the TV, and an NBC network online? Whether it originates on TV or the Internet won't matter."
