When we think of rugged machinery, our train of thought usually takes us to Panasonic, with its Toughbook line being at the center of the business. But companies like AMREL (American Reliance) are trying to keep up in terms of satisfying the needs of rugged professionals.

The company has just announced a pretty important update to its most popular laptop product to date, the 15-inch Rocky RK10. To give you a quick preview, AMREL has enhanced the notebook with a powerful i7 processor, improved storage options, extra memory and a better connectivity standard.

VP of Operations at AMREL introduced the revamped product by saying the Rock RK10 is “really a rugged laptop for the 21 st century. Modern applications, such as video streaming, are very data heavy. The new upgrades improve the RK10’s capability for processing large amounts of information.”

Although originally build to assist the needs the rugged professionals working in risky conditions (or environments), AMREL is currently targeting the laptop as a possible solution for recreational activities such as gaming. After all, there’s no reason why workers can’t take a moment and enjoy some time for themselves, when they are off duty.

The new upgrades include the addition of an Intel Sandy Bridge i7-2610UE processor fitted with Intel HD Graphics 3000 under the hood (granted, it’s not the latest generation Haswell, but it’s still a performant platform) and combined with up to 16GB of RAM (the base model has 4GB). AMREL has also added USB 3.0 ports, too.

Like all of AMREL’s mobile solutions, the Rocky RK10 has a resistant design meant to insure the notebook will be able to withstand whatever users throw at it. The RK platform has received both MIL-STD 810 and IP65 (MIL-STD 461 is also an option) certification.

The laptop is highly equipped for field operations which might bring about usage in delicate conditions, so it comes bundling applications such as Portable Sensor Control, Unmanned Systems Operator Control Units, Search & Rescue, Flight Line, Portable Radio System and more.

AMREL considers the ROCKY an indispensable tool for professionals like fire fighters, war-fighters, police, EMS and others conducting activities in critical environments.

“We’re very proud of the RK10 flexibility, which is highly unusual in such a durable computer. You might say the RK10 is a rugged laptop with consumer options.”

Even so, the ROCKY looks quite bulky and is quite thick, so we wouldn't recommend regular consumers picking this laptop up.
