The thing about solid state drives is that they can be amazingly compact, this being the main reason they are so popular in mobile PCs, and Active Media Products just updated one especially small product.

The SaberTooth Z series of solid state drives from Active Media Products has gained a new member, one that packs a fairly solid number of gigabytes inside a package of just 2.1 x 1.3 inches (54 x 32 mm).

Specifically, the newcomer, while sticking to the 1.8-inch form factor, can hold up to 64 GB of data at any given time.

Of course, knowing that there are memory cards with this very same storage space, the fact that SSDs of this sort would attain this same standard is not that great a shock.

Nevertheless, the newcomer is still quite a bit lighter and smaller than most other 1.8-inch PATA storage solutions, especially HDDs.

Shipments are already being carried out, so prospective buyers of such laptops as the HP Mini 1000 should find it as an optional component when setting up the configuration.

"We're pleased to finally offer the SaberTooth Z in a 64GB capacity. We've had so many requests from our upgrade customers for this product,” said Active Media Products VP of Sales, Jerry Thomson.

“This advancement demonstrates AMP's continued commitment to developing ever faster, more capacious solid state storage solutions."

The SSD is sold alone or as part of an upgrade kit that includes a ZIF cloning adapter. The transfer speeds reach up to 80 MB/s when reading and 55 MB/s when writing.

There should be quite a few laptops on the list of upgradeable products that customers can check out.

A full list has been provided by the SSD's maker itself and can be seen in full here. Dell, Apple, Fujitsu, HP, HTC, Lenovo, Sony and others are among those mentioned.
