And it all happened during Q4 of 2005

According to recent statistics published by Mercury Research, AMD has become much stronger in the fourth quarter of last year. Intel's constant competitor is now holding 21, 4% of the general processor market, meaning desktop, notebook and server processors all together.

Advanced Micro Device's growth is more than spectacular over such a short period, considering that the results announced for the third quarter indicated only a 17, 7% market share. Having surpassed the 20 percent share barrier is a new record for the SunnyVale producer. This plus the announced price cuts which should begin next month, AMD will surely sell even more processors, becoming even more powerful.

The company's jump last year was all due to the great success of the Opteron processors, the server oriented semiconductors, which sold much better than the previous quarter. AMD's server market share grew 4 percent, from a 12.7 market share for the third quarter to a 16 percent share in the last quarter. That's pretty much the same market share increase as AMD recorded for low power Athlon 64 chips. This is all good and cozy for the company compared to Intel, who missed its Q4 sales estimates. Still, Intel is still in the lead and has a more than comfortable advantage over the SunnyVale competitor, holding 77% of the processor market.
