They're great but they also came a bit too late for a lot of people

Yesterday, I received an e-mail about the Radeon R9 series of graphics cards from Advanced Micro Devices, and how their prices had gone overboard. The R9 280 is one whose tag is the most reasonable now.

You read it right, Advanced Micro Devices has admitted that the way prices swelled in the first quarter of 2014 was a bit much. Which is to say, somewhat ridiculous.

In some cases, video cards sold for 50% or even double their usual price, and yet demand never seemed to falter. Bitcoin miners were blamed for it.

I'm touching on the matter again to provide a bit of perspective. The difference in price might not have been apparent at first, so let's look at the R9 280. The board is $30 / €30 cheaper than it used to be, placing it at $249 / €249 or so.

The R9 290X is the most remarkable though, at $479-550 / €479-€550. $550 / €550 was actually the original MSRP, but the board somehow reached $900 / €900 at one point.

It's no wonder that AMD laid down the law. Now if only it had placed these boundaries, so to speak, before things got out of control. Alas, that did not occur, so we have to live with what we have.
