Starting with next month, Advanced Micro Devices intends to lower to prices of the socket 754 Semprons with up to 15%. The source of this information is the Taiwanese motherboard producer community, quoted by Digitimes.com.

This cheapening is announced as an advantage of the socket 754 Semprons over the Socket A versions. Even now, the socket 754 processors are much cheaper than the Socket A versions, and a new price cutoff will distance even more the two product categories.

Still, despite the promoting efforts for the Socket 754 solutions, statistics and reports show that users prefer the Socket A chips. The company intends to focus all efforts on the production of 64 bit architectures, derived from Socket 754 Semprons, even these are designed for 32 bits.

AMD?s launch plan also includes the 90 nanometer Semprons, code named Palermo, an event which should happen this trimester; therefore, the Semprons? cheapening could be just a method to prepare the grounds for the new solutions, a strategy applied every time the company launches a new line of products.

The dual-core Athlon 64, code named X2, will also be available in the second half of this year. The X2 line will consist of three chips, the models: 4400+, 4600+ and 4800+. The fastest of the processors will operate at 2.4 GHz. According to the same sources, we find out that AMD will not propose Athlon FX dual core type solutions.
