Rumors regarding AMD's role in the development of Microsoft's next-generation gaming console have been making their way to the Web for quite some time now, and a recent claim made by one of the company's officials seems to suggest that they are indeed behind the GPU used by the so-called Xbox 720.

In a recent interview with the OXM magazine, Neal Robison, director of ISV Relations for AMD Graphics Products Group, stated that the next-generation Xbox will be capable of the level of graphical detail seen in James Cameron's movie Avatar.

Even though Robison declined to confirm that AMD is working on the GPU used for the 360's successor, he added that gamers have a lot to be excited about the console's launch.

AMD's official continued to talk about the way in which A.I. and physics capabilities will evolve in next-generation hardware, stating that soon there will be no moB mentality in games, and that each NPC will behave differently when confronted with a similar situation.

Robison's statement regarding the Xbox 720 graphics comes a little more than a week after we reported on some rumors that stated all next-generation consoles will be powered by AMD graphics cores.

Back then, HardOCP believed that this decision looks pretty much like a “done deal,” after it talked with several sources from the gaming industry during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).

Right now, the only major console manufacturer to announce that their next-generation machine will use an AMD graphics core is Nintendo, which decided to include a Radeon-based GPU in its upcoming Wii U.

If Microsoft also joins this list, the only alternative left for Nvidia to get a piece of the console market would be to go with the PS4, if this isn't already an AMD stronghold.

From the information that is available at this time, Microsoft's is expected to unveil the Xbox 360's successor during E3 2012. (via Examiner)
