Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices has announced today that its line of mobile discrete graphics cards has been selected by an increased number of notebook manufacturers, enabling it to be inside more than half of today's discrete graphics notebooks. According to the company's data, the chip maker has recorded a 36.5% market share gain, with more than 87.27% more units being sold quarter-over-quarter throughout the first six months of this year. Apparently, this allows AMD to claim that it holds the “Number 1” spot in the mobile discrete graphics market, with an overall 53% market share in said segment.

“AMD has worked diligently to introduce technology that gives people an incredibly compelling visual experience on a notebook platform, and the latest market data showing the phenomenal uptake of ATI Mobility Radeon based notebooks validates the quality of both our products and that experience,” said Matt Skynner, vice president and general manager, GPU Division, AMD. “We’re moving into the back-to-school and holiday seasons, and there’s also the upcoming Microsoft Windows 7 operating system. AMD continues to provide the solutions for the mobile discrete market and ATI Mobility Radeon based notebooks.”

The momentum that AMD has gained is largely due to the launch of the company's latest generation of graphics processors, part of the chip maker's Radeon HD 4000 series of GPUs, including the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530 and the ATI Mobility Radeon 4670. These graphics solutions are designed to provide customers with support for Microsoft's latest DirectX 10.1 API, enabling an increased visual quality for the home theater PC experience.

In recent weeks, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000 series GPUs have been featured in a number of portable computer systems, including HP Pavilion dv6T, Alienware M17, Acer Aspire 5739G, Toshiba Satellite M500, Sony VAIO FW Series, Samsung R522, Asus W90Vp-X1, MSI GX623 and Dell Studio 15, which are among the 200 design wins that AMD has recorded for its mobile discrete graphics solutions.
