Sunnyvale, California-based AMD has just announced that it has shipped the 50 millionth ATI 'Hollywood' graphics processor for Nintendo's Wii gaming console. According to the chip maker, the graphics processor powering Nintendo's successful Wii gaming console, codenamed 'Hollywood', has become the most successful AMD game console chip to date, taking into consideration the number of sold units. As it turns out, the partnership between Nintendo and AMD has been a success for both companies.

The ATI 'Hollywood' graphics processor has been designed as a custom graphics solution meant to provide the video performance achieved by the now famous Wii gaming console. The chip is just another chapter in AMD and Nintendo's long history together. For 10 years now, the former has been providing the latter with graphics solutions that have made their way into products such as the GameCube and the current Wii.

“We congratulate Nintendo on this major milestone for its popular Wii console. AMD shares Nintendo’s excitement for delivering engaging experiences for every member of the family,” said Rick Bergman, senior vice president and general manager, Graphics Products Group, AMD. “We’re proud to provide the ATI ‘Hollywood’ chip as the cool and quiet graphics engine that factors so prominently in the overall enjoyment for Wii owners. AMD counts Nintendo as a valued customer and we continue to work together to make console entertainment a growing phenomenon worldwide.”

The announcement comes to confirm that AMD's 'Hollywood' chip was a great investment, which has enabled Nintendo to build one of world's most successful products to date. From the moment it was launched, the Nintendo Wii managed to draw the attention of gaming enthusiasts all over the world, specifically because it provided a different and more interactive way to play video games, compared to anything available on the market. AMD hasn't revealed if the two companies are working on a future Nintendo gaming console that will also be featuring an ATI graphics solution.
