Changes won't affect graphics development

By now, most end-users may have heard about the Fusion that AMD has been working on for a rather long period of time. This new type of processor, dubbed APU (accelerated processing unit), will combine a graphics processor with a CPU on the same piece of silicon. This technology will be somehow similar, at least in purpose, to the Clarkdale and Arrandale CPUs that Intel is currently selling. Now, in order to accelerate development of this new computing and graphics solution, AMD is planning on making some internal changes.

According to a report by Fudzilla, Advanced Micro Devices key staff will either change positions or take on new roles in order to more quickly develop the technology. John Taylor will no longer act as Director of product PR, instead becoming Director of Marketing for Fusion.

Also, Carrell Killebrew, known for such things as inventing the ATI Eyefinity technology and having served as leading product planner of AMD's graphics division, will move to Austin in order to take charge of overall product planning.

In the meantime, Andy Thompson will become Director of Graphics Technologies, replacing Godfrey Cheng. The latter will, in turn, move to Austin and take the position of Director of the Client Technologies unit. These two will then be able to more easily coordinate the graphics and client businesses, which will “be critical for success moving forward,” as the report indicates.

It may be interesting to note that Thompson was, at one time, Director of Marketing for Imageon. The folks over at Fudzilla also say that, as per their sources, there might be more changes on the way, with one possible outcome being the involvement of Chris Hook in the promotion of Fusion.

These management changes will supposedly not have any negative consequences upon the further development of graphics products and technologies.
